Part 2 , Lesson 2 : Internet of things real world applications

Updated: Jun 6, 2020

There are many real-world applications of the internet of things, ranging from consumer IoT and enterprise IoT.

In Rwanda there are local IoT solutions ranging from Transport to Agriculture sector and others.

According to Stes group Bazafarm is a solar powered IoT device that is put in the farm to measure water level, soil temperature and the fertility of the soil in real time and the farmer can access the data on their mobile phone, tablet or PC via Internet and make decisions accordingly. The device helps farmers achieve high yields of crops and also provides data of what the soil needs for the best growing environment of crops

With Tap &Go cards passengers can pay for trips around the city , this is enabled by GSM technology which is embedded in the receiver device (orange color in the Image 3) to access online database of Tap & go cards.

Community IoT projects.

The Oxford Flood network is a project to monitor river and stream levels throughout the City of Oxford and to react to the changes in levels. The first part of the project involved the design and development of a reliable sensor that could operate outdoors in all weather while reliably measuring the level of the water. The method for measuring the water level that was chosen is ultrasonic, this was seen to be a method that would create a small, low cost and reliable sensor that would not need to be regularly maintained.
